Met Gala 2014 Review!

Well hello there!

The Met Gala is one of the most sought after events of the year where basically every famous person, that Anna Wintour likes, attends in fancy clothes. The event is actually called The Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, but has been shorted. Each year has a strict theme, last year's was my favourite with it being Punk: Chaos to Couture, and this year's was "the technologically advanced couturier Charles James and white tie" according to vogue.com.

Basically everyone dresses in white and black or just showstopping gowns and tuxedos and walks up (there's stairs at the MET so yes, it is up) the red carpet which leads into the Metropolitan Museum. What they do inside, I have not a single clue, but I assume it has nothing to do with the art because people like Kim Kardashian are invited.

The thing about this event is that it's meant to be costumey. They show off what kind of crazy designs that designers have created which aren't suitable for other red carpets.

Here are some of my favourite pieces (all pictures are taken from vogue.com unless otherwise specified):

Queen of The Met Gala, Sarah Jessica Parker, in Oscar de la Renta

Bradley Cooper looking extremely handsome in Tom Ford

Hailee Steinfeld, 17, looking gorgeous in Prabal Garung

Suki Waterhouse, Bradley Cooper's girlfriend, in a beautiful Burberry gown

When I think of the Met Gala this is what I think of, so hats off to Tabatha Simmons in Dolce & Gabbana

The beautifully elegant Rachel McAdams in Ralph Lauren

 Jessica Paré in Michael Kors

Oh beautiful day, All of Me singer John Legend in Ralph Lauren

Emmy Rossum really made this Carolina Herrera gown come to life with simplicity

The most beautiful couple to ever grace a red carpet, The Beckham's, David in Ralph Lauren Black Label, Victoria in her own design

Liu Wen, capturing the essence of the Met Gala, in Zac Posen

An absolutely stunning choice for Elizabeth Olsen, by Miu Miu

Michelle Williams looks fantastic in this short dress by Louis Vuitton

Lauren Bush in Ralph Lauren Collection taking a simple yet beautiful approach to a costume gala

Selena Gomez always looks extremely stunning in this colour and last night was no exception in this gown by Diane von Furstenberg (source)

Now for my all time favourite of the night. This is not a typical gown that someone can wear at any other event besides the Met Gala which is exactly why it was my favourite.

Karolina Kurkova in Marchesa

What would the Met Gala be without some bad contenders? Nadda!

Here are my least favourite of the night (yet again all from vogue unless otherwise stated):

Now I know Anna Wintour is the creator of this event and is the almighty queen of fashion, but this Chanel dress does not look good on her. I think this would look amazing on Katy Perry but I do not like it on Wintour.

I'm not sure if Katie Holmes was attempting to look like Belle, but she missed the mark big time in this Marchesa gown (source)

The peplum on this Oscar de la Renta dress did not flatter Aerin Lauder. The print is way too matronly for such an extravagant event like this one.

This Donna Karan Atelier dress would have looked so beyond gorgeous on Rita Ora without the arm twist thing and a different shoe. An Angelina Jolie leg could have made an appearance had it not been for the strapped thigh.

Oh Rosie! What have you done to this beautiful Balmain dress? Those shoes take away a lot of attraction of the dress which does not make Ms. Hunington-Whiteley look good.

I feel like I've seen a similar print somewhere else... oh wait! I have! On Jessica Paré... in the same designer! Michael Kors, you should have warned Zoë Saldana before she walked the carpet in this oddly-placed-bubbled dress!

Oh boy. Normally I love purple hair on people but this entire ensemble Nicole Richie has going on makes me sad. I can see her tramp stamp which only reminds me of her Simple Life days. This Donna Karan dress does not have a suitable train for the short lady, it just overall looks frumpy. What was happening with Donna Karan last night?

Last but ultimately least, is the worst dressed of the night, according to me.
If you want to wear pants to the gala, by all means go for it! But why does Janelle Monae need the Tadashi Shoji cape? This was the first outfit which I had seen and my immediate thought was "please don't let everyone else be dressed like this!" and I'm thankful they weren't!

As I wrote all of the above before 9pm (this entire post has been written yesterday for you reading on Tuesday), more celebrities have walked the carpet. I am going to post below, with either a good or bad above it, more pictures of some outfits with the names of the celebrities wearing them! Yet again, all pictures are from Vogue.

Overall, the Met Gala is the place for all kinds of imaginative designs to be paraded around by celebrities who have rented them. This year wasn't too bad, but I honestly just did not see a good theme going on. Stella McCartney absolutely KILLED IT this year. Every single outfit she had out there was amazing!

To end on a good note, my all time favourite Met Gala look comes from last year with my main girl Miley Cyrus bringing the punk theme to life in Marc Jacobs.

Anyway, I think your brain my be extremely overwhelmed at this point by all of these images so I'm going to let you get on with your Tuesday!

Whats your favourite look from last night?

-MacKenzie
