21 Things I've Learned Before Turning 21

Well hello there!

21

Whether you're reminiscing about 21, turning 21, or petrified of being 21... this is for you.

I debated a lot about whether I should do 21 quotes, 21 things I've done, or even 21 things I want to happen while I'm 21. But these past few days I've been given quite the hurdles to jump over and it really made me think about all of the things I've learned since turning 20. You might have read my "20 Things I've Learned Before Turning 20" post from last year which had been a collection of things up until the day before my birthday. It doesn't seem like much happens within a year that you would learn 21 new things but looking back, there's a lot. So each year before my birthday I'm going to read my post from the previous year, reflect on the year that has passed since then, and then think about all the things I've learned. Without further ado, here are the 21 things I have learned before turning 21.

1. You aren't a child anymore. Yes, you are someone's child, but when you make a mistake you're now held very accountable for it.

2. Watching Netflix all day will not get anything you have on your to-do list done. But the list can wait until tomorrow.

3. Your friends will become adults before your very eyes and it will send you into a whirlwind of emotions. Babies, marriages, houses, relationships, graduations, careers... they'll all come in one big swoop that you'll never be prepared for.

4. Poetry isn't as boring as you might have once thought it was. It's short, concise, and often leaves you with some kind of pondering thought.

5. Money will come and go. Don't depend on it and don't worry about it.

6. Chocolate is good for the soul, regardless of what any doctor or study might say.

7. You will get asked a million more questions about what you're doing with your life. You'll find a short enough explanation that sums it up without having to answer even more questions about it.

8. Those people you see casted for the Real World that you feel like a teenager compared to? Yeah, they're you're age.

9. Accept people for who they are. Don't try to change them. Don't underestimate them. Don't make them out to be something they're not. Just let them be.

10. Leggings are pants.

11. No one else has any idea as to what's going on either. That 40 year old that you think looks so put together is questioning everything they've done and will do too.

12. Do whatever you want to do. People will have opinions regardless of what it is.

13. Stop being scared. Yes there are scary things that happen and that you must do, but being scared of them won't allow you to face them.

14. Buy something you normally wouldn't wear and rock it. Patterned pants. Bright lipstick. Whatever it is, buy it and never second guess it. You'll look amazing.

15. Help whomever needs it. But also know when you need to help yourself too.

16. Sing loudly. Always. Even if other people can hear you.

17. Chose your heart over your head. Your head will figure out a plan.

18. Smile more often.

19. Dream big.

20. Breathe.

21. It will be okay.

What's one thing you've learned in the past year?
